Webinar: Connecting Families to Employment Support: Chrysalis Resources & Services

Outreach Specialists in the Welcome Baby program seek to enroll families during pregnancy. But they do more than intakes; they also play an important role in connecting families to helpful services and building relationships in the communities they serve. The more they know about community resources, the better they can be at supporting families with whatever they need.

One such resource is Chrysalis, an organization that helps people prepare for, find, and keep jobs.

In an LA Best Babies Network-hosted webinar on September 16, 2026 — for Outreach Specialists and other staff of our network’s home visiting organizations and Welcome Baby hospitals — Malik Owens, Program Manager at Downtown L.A. Chrysalis, discussed:

  • Chrysalis services and programs: How they help individuals overcome barriers to employment and reconnect with the workforce
  • Employment and job-readiness support: Resources and individualized services designed to help individuals prepare for and find employment
  • Supportive resources: Additional services available to help individuals work toward greater stability and self-sufficiency
  • Who Chrysalis serves: Information about the individuals and families who may benefit from Chrysalis programs and services
  • Accessing services and referrals: How individuals can get connected to Chrysalis and what the referral process looks like
  • Connecting families to resources: Ways Outreach Specialists can use this information to identify families who may benefit from employment and supportive services and help connect them to appropriate resources

Community members can walk in to any Chrysalis center Monday through Thursday (doors open at 8:00am) for an orientation and then be connected with an Employment Specialist. From there, they can enroll in services and attend classes covering job readiness, interviewing, applications, and job searching. Orientation and classes are offered in English and Spanish.

Chrysalis also provides resume-building support and works with people to develop an employment plan based on their experience, interests, skills, and goals. Support continues through active job searching and skill building, as well as after someone finds a job. Chrysalis’ retention team follows up after 2–3 months, and individuals can continue accessing services even after they are employed.

If families are unable to visit a physical Chrysalis location, they can still receive support virtually or over the phone. Chrysalis may even be able to provide transportation assistance, including taxis and vouchers. They also offer virtual orientations and virtual job-preparation classes, making their services more accessible to families who cannot attend in person.

Chrysalis also helps address some of the practical barriers that can make it harder to find and keep a job. Additional resources may include professional clothing for interviews, hygiene products, transportation assistance, scholarship funds, and sack lunches.

At their locations, individuals have access to computer labs with internet, printing, and copying services. A phone is available for use as needed, and mail can be sent directly to program locations. These resources are especially helpful for those residing in transitional housing.

Chrysalis’s Employment Social Enterprise is a transitional job program for those who may be facing more significant barriers to getting a job. It provides job opportunities through four areas: Staffing, Works, Roads, and Safekeeping. These programs connect clients with employers and provide hands-on work in staffing, street and freeway maintenance, housekeeping, janitorial services, and customer service.
