Webinar: Confidence in Breastfeeding Support and Updated Practices for Hospital Liaisons

Hospital Liaisons in the Welcome Baby program meet with families shortly after childbirth. As they provide support and education on topics such as maternal health, infant care, bonding, and breastfeeding, HLs have a unique opportunity to help families feel informed and confident during the postpartum period.

Although HLs may have limited time with families during their hospital stay, these interactions can still have a meaningful impact. Many families may not yet have the knowledge needed to feel successful with breastfeeding, and HLs can play a role in helping them build confidence in caring for and feeding their baby.

In an LA Best Babies Network-hosted webinar on May 28, 2026 — for Hospital Liaisons and other staff of our network’s home visiting organizations and Welcome Baby hospitals — Kaylee Rabaja, Registered Nurse and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, discussed:

  • How milk supply works
  • Colostrum collection
  • Up-to-date practices to support breastfeeding
  • How to prioritize breastfeeding in the first few days of life
  • Different types of pumps on the market
  • When to begin pumping and how to build a milk stash
  • Current practices around pump hygiene and milk storage
  • How to navigate reliable, evidence-based resources

Kaylee emphasized the importance of encouraging families to breastfeed on demand rather than following a strict feeding schedule. Responding to infant hunger cues helps support adequate intake and successful breastfeeding.

She also highlighted the importance of latch confidence. A comfortable and effective latch supports efficient milk removal and helps parents feel more confident feeding their baby independently. If mothers are experiencing pain while breastfeeding, HLs can help with repositioning the baby and adjusting the latch to improve comfort and effectiveness.

The webinar addressed a common concern new parents have: whether babies are feeding enough. HLs and other Welcome Baby staff help families learn to monitor adequate intake by tracking wet and dirty diapers, observing whether the baby appears satisfied and content after feeds, and following weight gain and growth curves, which providers also track over time.

Kaylee also discussed the importance of understanding when supplementation may or may not be necessary as part of supporting breastfeeding success.

Her webinar concluded with guidance on when and why pumping may be recommended, while still protecting the breastfeeding relationship. Pumping can support milk supply by increasing stimulation, help meet feeding goals, and provide flexibility when medically necessary or when parents are away from baby.
