Webinar: California Family Leave Rights: What Expecting Families Need to Know

Most people know that California has laws that guarantee pregnant workers time off to get prenatal care, recover from giving birth, and care for a newborn. But some of the details can get confusing, and home visiting programs often get questions from their clients about family leave benefits. Fortunately, the California Work & Family Coalition helps educate home visitors and others so they’re ready with answers.

The Coalition is a statewide alliance of community organizations, unions, nonprofits, and individuals dedicated to helping parents, caregivers, and families. In addition to providing educational resources, the Coalition advocates for policies to ensure that people have enough time and resources to care for themselves and each other.

With two presenters from the California Work & Family Coalition, LA Best Babies Network hosted the webinar below on March 14, 2024, for Welcome Baby Outreach Specialists and other staff in L.A. County’s home visiting organizations and Welcome Baby hospitals.

In the presentation, Jenya Cassidy, Director of the California Work and Family Coalition, and Jasmine Amian, the Coalition’s Education and Training Manager, explain:

  • Family leave protections and rights afforded to caregivers in California
  • How to share this information with expecting families so they know how to work with their employers and the state to access family leave benefits
  • The resources available from the California Work & Family Coalition and other organizations/agencies

    About the presenters:

Jenya Cassidy has been working on family-friendly legislative policy since the first California campaign to win Paid Family Leave in 2002. Before leading the Coalition, she was Policy Director for the Labor Project for Working Families and a Project Manager for Next Generation. As a union representative for SEIU, Local 250 Healthcare Workers Union, she learned about the connection between health and safety and winning workers’ rights. Jenya has also worked as a community organizer and on disability rights campaigns.

Jasmine began her journey in education and serving the community as a City Year AmeriCorps student mentor in Los Angeles. Her experience in teaching inspired her to teach abroad for two years in Taiwan. In her role as a learning experience designer at EL Education, she helped educators learn curriculum foundations by crafting supplemental online training. She also built and managed a virtual learning support group within her instructional design academy, fostering community building and knowledge sharing.
