Video: ‘Know Your Rights’ Workshop, New Toolkit for Immigrant Families

In the mid-19th century, the Irish comprised nearly half of all immigrants to the United States. So perhaps it was fitting that three South L.A. home visiting agencies spent their St. Patrick’s Day learning how to better support the immigrant families they serve.

SHIELDS for Families, Richstone Family Center, and El Nido Family Centers — all part of L.A. County’s Family Strengthening Network — hosted a “Know Your Rights” workshop for staff and families at the Lynwood office of SHIELDS. These organizations and the speaker — Public Counsel‘s Sr. Staff Attorney Gina Amato Lough — graciously gave us permission to videotape and share the presentation. Part 1 provides an update on federal immigration policies and related areas of immigration law. In Part 2, the speaker fields various questions and explains eligibility requirements for the U visa. (Download the entire Know Your Rights presentation and a referral sheet of Free or Low-Cost Immigration Screenings. Both files are in English and Spanish.)

Separately, the L.A. Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs just released a “Community Resource Guide for Immigrant Angelenos.” This toolkit (in English and Spanish) contains helpful information and support resources — print and share widely!
