Webinar: Impact of Birth Complications on Bodyfeeding Outcomes and Solutions – Blood Loss
Breastfeeding: it’s natural but not always easy. And it’s possible for it to get a little more challenging when birth complications exist. Why? Because certain labor complications can lead to a disruption of the breastfeeding/chestfeeding process.
But there are ways to help people overcome these challenges and support their breastfeeding/chestfeeding goals.
In this webinar — hosted by LA Best Babies Network on August 24, 2022, for staff in our network of home visiting organizations and Welcome Baby hospitals — presenter Sarah Shealy:
- Helps us understand the most common birth interventions and their impact on bodyfeeding
- Explains the physiology of blood loss at birth and how it relates to milk production
- List steps for assessing a person’s postpartum nutritional status
- Provides strategies on how to advise postpartum families about nutritional support for optimal recovery
This webinar is an extension of a previously recorded webinar, “Impact of Birth Experiences of Bodyfeeding Outcomes.”
About the presenter:
Sarah Shealy, MSN, CNM, IBCLC, has worked with birthing families since the 1990s. Educated by some of the most amazing midwives, her focus as a health care provider has always been to deeply trust the wisdom of the birthing person, the process of birth, and to serve the community. As someone who has worked both in community and hospital settings, she brings a unique perspective to how the medical system impacts the normal processes of labor, postpartum, and bodyfeeding. She has attended births in hospitals large and small, as well as in homes, vans, and even in a yurt. She has first assisted in hundreds of c-sections and supported thousands of families with infant feeding. She loves to teach and mentor nurses, midwives, and other birth workers. Sarah has a particular interest in the postpartum experience, and how we can narrow the gap in care for postpartum people in our system.
