The Best Practices Hiring Guide for Increasing African American Home Visiting Staff
Creating a workforce that reflects the diversity of the community is a long road — from recruiting to hiring to training and managing. But it’s worth it, from both a moral and practical standpoint.
To help home visiting programs attract and retain more African American talent, the Los Angeles County Perinatal and Early Childhood Home Visitation Consortium produced the Best Practices Hiring Guide for Increasing African American Home Visiting Staff.
With a variety of useful information and resources — including sections on drafting a job description, targeting recruitment efforts, supporting African American staff, and communicating effectively on social media — the guide represents the Consortium’s commitment to address equity issues in home visiting and to promote well-trained and supported home visitors.
Organizations that offer home visiting services are encouraged to use the guide. If yours does, please share any challenges, recommendations, or successes with the Consortium at LACPECHVC_Coordinator@labestbabies.org. Or reach out to join a workgroup and be part of the next great resource the Consortium produces! Here’s a calendar of workgroup meetings.
The Consortium is a network of over 60 perinatal and early childhood home visiting programs, maternal and child health organizations, advocacy groups, and stakeholders. They work together to support Los Angeles County’s home visiting programs through shared trainings, educational resources, research, and advocacy. Learn more at HomeVisitingLA.org.
