Telemundo Los Angeles Highlights Home Visiting Services
Home Visiting Day (celebrated April 19 this year) caught the attention of Telemundo 52, a Spanish news outlet in Los Angeles, which aired a story highlighting home visiting services on May 16.
Part of their “In Your Neighborhood” segment, the story featured a client named Daisy and her one-year-old son, who participate in the Parents as Teachers home visiting program at Child Care Resource Center in the San Fernando Valley. Daisy credits the program with helping her five children in many different ways. “I can see the growth in my children,” she said. “They are very smart and try a lot of things.”
Elizabeth Lomeli, a Parent Educator at CCRC, has been working with Daisy and her children for several months. Elizabeth shared some of the benefits of home visiting: “We show parents how to be with their children, create a better environment, how to communicate and play with their children. We also connect families to additional community resources.”
Diana Careaga, Director of the Family Supports Team at First 5 LA (which funds these programs throughout L.A. County), was also interviewed for this story. “Parents are the first and most important teachers of their children,” she said. She also talked about the L.A. County Home Visiting eDirectory, a simple tool that helps families find a free home visiting program in their community. The eDirectory also makes it easy for clinics, WIC offices, and others to make referrals for expecting families or those who have recently given birth.
Thanks so Telemundo 52 for getting the word out about these terrific services!
