Spotlight on the Staff: Veronica Ramirez
LA Best Babies Network’s Staff Spotlight series features staff from the Welcome Baby, Healthy Families America, and Parents as Teachers home visiting programs in Los Angeles County’s Family Strengthening Network.
The home visitors we talk to often point to something or someone in their childhood that set them on a path to serving others.
For Veronica Ramirez it was the support her family received from a couple community service organizations. As she says in the video below, those programs “made such a positive impact in my life and guided me in the direction to receive an education and give back to my community.”
When Veronica interviewed for the Family Support Specialist position with Child and Family Guidance Center in Palmdale (northern Los Angeles County), she thought about how those organizations had served as a protective factor for her family. When the director mentioned during the interview that working with a home visitor might be the only healthy relationship some of these families have, Veronica thought, wow, I can be someone’s protective factor.
Having previously worked as a vocational counselor for adults with developmental disabilities, and as a community outreach counselor for those experiencing homelessness, Veronica has probably already been that protective factor for more than a few people. “My past experiences allow me to connect with the families in a unique way,” she says, and they also helped her become familiar with various community resources.
She says “parents have expressed appreciation for the curriculum and referrals provided,” but “the greatest benefit for clients is knowing they do not have to do it alone, and are only a question away from getting answers.”
