Housing and Homelessness: Resources for Families in L.A. County
It started with the idea of getting the word out about this new affordable housing project in East Los Angeles, which is accepting waitlist applications from low-income families.
Then we thought we should also remind everyone about the Helping Homeless, Pregnant Women Overcome Barriers to Care webinar we hosted almost a year ago: the recording is still available, and still relevant, as are the accompanying resources included in that blog post.
Finally, we thought we might as well compile and share a list of the best city- and county-wide resources related to housing and homelessness. Here’s that list:
- 211 LA County – Housing: Shelter options – including a list specifically for pregnant women – plus resources for rental assistance, landlord/tenant disputes, and lots more.
http://www.211la.org/housing - One Degree, Los Angeles – Housing: A searchable directory of services and lots of resources. Search online, in the app (Android or iPhone), or even by text (text a keyword like “housing” to 844-833-1334). Giving 211 a run for their money.
http://www.1degree.org/search?area=Housing - L.A. County Housing Resource Center: A property-search service that links people with affordable housing in L.A. County, plus a list of resources/tools.
http://housing.lacounty.gov - City of L.A. Housing Resource Center: A property-search service that links people with affordable housing in the city of L.A., plus a list of resources/tools.
http://www.housing.lacity.org - Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA)
Hotline: 213-225-6581
Monday – Friday, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm - LAHSA’s Community Resource List: Organized by SPA, this list includes resources for food/groceries, free meals, transportation, showers/hygiene, laundry, school supplies, and storage facilities.
http://www.lahsa.org/documents?id=3622-community-resource-list-by-spa.pdf - L.A. County Homeless Outreach Portal (LA-HOP): Allows you to submit a request to have a homeless services outreach team dispatched to a person or family experiencing homelessness in L.A. County:
http://www.lahsa.org/portal/apps/la-hop/request - WIN (What I Need): A free mobile app (Android or iPhone) and website that connects users to 12 categories of free resources. Users can search for anything from food pantries and homeless shelters to free health services and educational resources, and more. Users can also connect to live assistance hotlines through the “I Need Help Now” section.
- HOPICS housing: Also provides social support, re-entry, behavioral health and primary health care services.

Obviously, not an exhaustive list here, but many of these have lists of their own. Please post a comment below if we missed something — or if you hear of any new affordable housing options for low-income families. Thanks very much!
