Spotlight on the Staff: Elizabeth Lomeli
LA Best Babies Network’s Staff Spotlight series features staff from the Welcome Baby, Healthy Families America, and Parents as Teachers home visiting programs in Los Angeles County’s Family Strengthening Network.
Looking for a career helping families, Elizabeth Lomeli — a Parent Educator with the Parents as Teachers program at Child Care Resource Center — turned to home visiting.
“This role has given me the opportunity to support families by encouraging them to grow as advocates for their family well-being, their children, and to empower them with knowledge on community resources,” she says.
She has supported many families in the San Fernando Valley in the 6 years she has been a Parent Educator. One that stands out is a client who struggled with postpartum psychosis after giving birth to her child. Through bi-weekly visits, Elizabeth provided her with consistent support and connected her to community resources that helped her overcome this.
What does she love most about her job? “I love seeing the caregivers and children reach different milestones and accomplish their goals during the time they are in the home visiting program,” she says. “I enjoy seeing the difference we can make when connecting families to different resources in the community.”
She recalls helping a client who was interested in learning more about educational opportunities in her community. With Elizabeth’s support, she ended up enrolling in school to pursue a college degree.
This year, six families she’s supported over the course of five years will be graduating from the program. She met many of them during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges and fears many faced during that time, the families remained in the program. Their first interactions with Elizabeth were virtual via Zoom, and when it was safe to do so, they welcomed Elizabeth into their homes. “These families left a mark,” she says.
It doesn’t take much to recognize Elizabeth’s passion for what she does. In 2024, Telemundo 52, a Spanish-language news outlet in Los Angeles, highlighted her work with a family. See her in action below.
