Fourth-Time Mom Finds Value in Home Visiting

Ariel is Luz’s first son, but Luz wasn’t new to parenthood. She has three girls, but it had been 13 years since she had given birth to her youngest daughter.

So, yes, she was already familiar with some of the parenting challenges she would face. Yet, she also had enough experience to know that each child is different, and she and her husband Tony expected they would have new questions and concerns as they raised their son.

This is why Luz and Tony chose to enroll in a home visiting program at the hospital when Ariel was born. Days after Luz was discharged from the hospital, Lorena — a Parent Educator with the Parents as Teachers home visiting program at Child Care Resource Center in the San Fernando Valley — met Luz and Tony at their home.

Lorena continues to work with Luz and Tony, providing helpful tips and guidance at each visit to help Ariel get the best start in life. Watch the video below to see part of a home visit, and to hear Luz and Tony explain how the program has helped their family.

Child Care Resource Center (in Los Angeles County’s San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley) is one of many agencies in the Family Strengthening Network. The Network includes two dozen community organizations and 14 Welcome Baby hospitals that support families throughout Los Angeles County with home visiting services. In the 2017-18 fiscal year, over 15,000 families were served through the Network, which is funded by First 5 LA.
